Is Not Playing an Option?
Winter in the UK can be a frustrating place to be for a Golfer. Your local course is shut (again), and every glance at the weather app reveals a relentless conveyor belt of grey clouds and disappointment. You can find yourself contemplating a winter without playing at all.
But I resist the temptation to hibernate. Unfortunately I’ve no choice, for Golf is a part of me. It’s so deeply ingrained that it sits on the edge of my conscious thought at most times. It’s always there ready to pop up and make me look like a madman…
Cooking at home, wooden spoon in hand, I’ll suddenly stop. Like a meerkat noticing something strange on the horizon, I’ll gaze into the distance, locking eyes on my imaginary target. A moment later I’m assuming my address position. Completely focused, I’ll go through my pre-shot routine. Checking my grip on the spoon, analysing my feet position, very slightly adjusting my height. I’ll look up at my imaginary target, take a deep breath, look back at the invisible ball laying flush on the kitchen tiles. Another look back at the target, one last adjustment of grip pressure, and swing. Holding the finish, i’ll imagine a ball sailing through the sky towards my target. Some golfers will do this silently, others will make a little noise on impact. I’m in the latter camp. The little noise I make to replicate the sound of the ball hitting the club face, will alert my Dog Buddy, rounding the corner into the Kitchen. The confused look on his face says it all.
Through this madness, one thing is clear, I need to keep playing in the Winter. They say, we’re lucky in the UK to have four distinct seasons. Enduring a wet Autumn and a frozen winter makes us savor that moment when it turns to Spring and then those long summer evenings. The magic of those times is made all the more special for enduring golf when it’s less perfect.
Getting out in Winter provides the foundations for improving into the golfing season, so for me, it’s important to still get out.
To help you navigate the ‘off season’, we’ve rounded up the best winter golf gear for 2025, from waterproof shoes and gloves to jackets and essentials that make year-round golf actually enjoyable.
Why Proper Winter Gear Matters
Quite simply because playing good shots matter, winning the monthly medal matters, beating your long suffering golf pals on the last green matters. Playing through winter isn’t just about bravery, it’s about preparation. Having a good grip on the club and a solid stance are core fundamentals of the game, these are often impacted in winter without the right equipment.
The Core Winter Golf Kit

Stay stable and dry with waterproof, grippy shoes designed for wet, muddy fairways.
Keep your hands warm and your swing secure even when it’s freezing.
